Yarn Bombing My Sony WH-H900 Headset

Both my Hubs and I have a set of Sony WH-H900 wireless headsets.  We had purchased them a few years prior to the pandemic as we were traveling a lot back then and had found the headsets to be extremely comfortable on the plane, making travel infinitely better for us.  Now that quite a few years have passed, like many electronic items, the headband and ear pads are starting to fall apart - actually, to be clear, it's more like flaking apart!😵‍💫😱😭
The headset itself is still perfectly fine, working and providing the same amount of comfort like it did on Day 1.  All it needs now is a little face-lift so that we don't have black/grey flakes in our hair and on our ears from the pleather parts.  So, here's what I did:

With my Chiaogoo 3.25mm (US3) needles and my leftover Malabrigo Rios Palumbo and Coco yarn, I:

  • Casted on 60 sts
  • Made 30 rows of seed st
  • Did 2 turning rows
  • Did 13 1x1 rib rows
  • Finished off with 2 rows of seed st
  • Bound off using the Icelandic bind off method.

Because Hubs has a sensitive head, I decided to add padding to the top of the headband area.  To make sure that I could replace/add more stuffing as needed, I knitted a "pocket" for his headband as follows:

For the padding itself, I:
  • Casted 10 sts
  • Seed st 2 rows
  • Stockinette st 2 rows
  • Knit 41 rows
  • 2 turning rows
  • Knit 41 rows
  • Seed st 3 rows
  • Bind off by connecting to the city on Row then seam edges

Then for the actual pocket, I picked up 41 sts on the 15th row on the inside of the headband.  Then knit: 2 seed st rows, 16 knit rows then 2 more seed st rows.  Bind off by attaching the flap onto the headband.
Pinning out where the "pocket" should go
How it actually came out 😉

Then, I realized that the top of the head band was too short!😳😱🤦‍♀️  So, I ripped out the bind off and redid the 2 seed st rows and added another 10 rows of 1x1 ribbing then put back the 2 rows of seed st and bind off again.

Here's the completed headband:

It is quite thick but, Hubs claims that it is SUPER comfortable and he's quite happy with it. 🥰👍

Now, it was time to make earpads covers.  I used some leftover sock yarn and this pattern as a guide and started the left muff as follows:

Cast on 8 sts
Knit 1 row
Kfb 1 row for 16 sts
Knit 1 row
K2, kfb to the end of the row for 30 sts
K 3 rows
*Kfb, k1* to the end of the row for 45 sts
Knit 3 rows
*Kfb, k1* to the end of the row for 68 sts
Knit 1 row
Knit folding row: *s1b, p*
Knit folding row: *s1f, k*
Knit 5 1x1 rib rows
Decrease 2 sts every 10 sts: *k2tog, p2tog, *k, p 6x**, repeat 6x, ending with k2tog, p2tog, k, p on the last 6 sts for 54 sts

It seemed to work OK but, it seemed like I would need to do have a tie or something to really keep it on.   So, when I made the right side, Hubs suggested that I maybe want try to simply make a pouch like cover for it where I could do a couple of short rows.  So, I followed the same instructions as the left side then added:
To "turn the cover", use the Fish Lips method:
M1, k1, TS
P3, TS
K till 2 past the TS, TS, same for the Purl side
Knit 2 1x1 rib rows
Bind off

However, when I tried to put it on my ear pad, it didn't quite work because of the nature of the ear piece and the :heel" that I had turned came out way too big.  Since I had winged the left side (and wasn't very happy with it to begin with as it didn't seem like it would really stay onto the ear pad), this wasn't boding well for me.  Frustrated and at my wits end 😤😔🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️, I needed to take a break from the ear pad covers.  During this interim, I worked on making a menagerie of stuffed animals where I learned a lot more about short rows.  Feeling like I was in a much better place, I picked up the right side again, ripped out the "turn" and tried again based on some of the new techniques I learned.  Nevertheless, it simply wasn't working.

As you can see, the left side is barely hanging on and the right side just isn't hanging on whatsoever.

Fortunately, my work headset was also falling apart and instead of buying a new headset, I also just got ear pad covers for it.  I had told Hubs about it and recommended that we get this for his ear pads instead.  I really liked the ones I purchased as it's quite comfortable (I wear it for at least 6-8 hrs a day, 4-5 days a week), fits over the ear pads really well, and most importantly, it's washable.🎉🎊🥳👍

And thus, this was how my adventure yarn bombing Hubs Sony Headset ended: with just a headband cover:
