2023 Purchases

Well, another year has gone by and it's now 2023.  While most of the world is "going back to normal", the pandemic is still on-going.  China has decided to end its zero-COVID policy and COVID was running rampant everywhere.  It is now unclear how the pandemic will play out.  There are new variants and more folks are starting to get long COVID (or at least catch COVID multiple times now).  Because of this, life (for us) will be the same as it was in 2021.  Which means ... 2023 pandemic purchases! ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ™Œ ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿ‘

Here's my 2023 (Pandemic) Purchases:

In January, I purchased:

  • Another set of Chiaogoo US1-3 3" needles with 2 more 14" & 22" mini cables & 4 more mini connectors from my favorite knitting needle supplier.  I was working on a lace weight sweater and wanted to work on the sleeves simultaneously with the body so ... I needed more needles (as I didn't have enough for the body and sleeves) & cables (as I was using nearly all my cables as life lines all over my sweater๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ˜).  I was so excited that it came in so quickly that I had forgotten to take a picture of my new stash and just put it all on my sweater project as soon as I got it!๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ˜
  • A new swift:  I happened across Paradise Fibers over the New Year's holiday and noticed they had a Super Swift II; it looked like it was noticeably smaller than my current Chiaogoo Swift (as well as more more expensive than my original swift ๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿ˜ถ).  However, it did: 1) come in walnut; 2) look like it would breakdown much smaller than my Chiaogoo swift; and most importantly 3) look like it would accommodate a wider variety of different lengths of yarn, including wider diameters of yarn as the "pegs" were fully adjustable.  So, I decided to give it a try.  Here's what I got:

While it's a bit too wide to put in my custom swift bag, it actually fits in another bag I had which in turn, allowed it to fit in my other bag where I keep my ball winder in!  The dream of having all my yarn winding things in one (1) bag is coming true!๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿฅฐ❤️๐Ÿฅณ

REVIEW:  The swift is slightly longer than my Chiaogoo swift due to the lack of pegs.  With this in mind, I had hoped that it would provide the exact diameter needed for the yarn to properly tension onto my ball winder.  It did that but, due to the felt pads, there was simply too much drag on it to spin in time with my ball winder and I had often ended up with a messy and tangled ball of yarn.  Hubs had some teflon tape which I put on my metal washer which helped to make it spin more smoothly.  It look some testing (& patience!) and making sure my yarn was not twisted in any way for me to successfully use it but after winding a few more skeins of yarn, I find that I really do like my new swift. ๐Ÿ‘

In February, I managed to actually purchase .... nothing!!! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿฅณ

In March, I broke down and purchased:

  • Three (3) KnowKnits bags in a Large, Medium and a Zip bag.  I had originally seen this bag when I had gone on my Big Island Yarn Crawl.  Back then, I couldn't bring myself to purchase it; however, since then, I use my JIB Press bags all the time for my knitting.  While it's taken me a while to get around to these bags, I'm actually glad I waited.  The bags I had originally seen on the Big Island, were the Original colours and the bags that I purchased are Jewel toned colours (and the Zip bag is a newly released bag).  So, it must've been serendipity that I had run across someone's Instagram shot showing these bags to pique my interest in them (again). ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿคญ๐Ÿ˜
REVIEW:  The jewel toned bags are beautiful and very vibrant. ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ’• I'm so glad that I waited and ended up with these colours. ๐Ÿ˜ They're also significantly larger than my JIB press pouches.  The chocolate one is HUGE (I swear you could put a twin-sized blanket in there!) and while the description states that it could be used as a backpack, unless you don't have much in there, I wouldn't recommend doing so as the paracord on it is not that comfortable as straps.  In some ways, I wish the medium Ocean coloured bag straps also connected to the bottom as I can see that as a very handy feature; otherwise, I can see the medium being reasonable for a large shawl or a sweater (adult or child) sized project in there - you'd just have to be strategic on how you pack your bag to make sure you get to what you need as you work through your project as the bag is quite deep. The turquoise one didn't feel like it held more than my largest JIB pouch but, it could possibly be bigger or comparable to it (I'm not sure as I don't have a project that maximizes the bag right now); I can see it fitting a smaller shawl/scarf type project or the beginnings of an adult-sized sweater project in there (or a whole child sized sweater project).  And, unlike its cousins, the zipped pouch does not come with an inner snap to guide yarn nor are the inner seams sealed.๐Ÿ˜ถ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿ˜”  On top of that, the owner also sent me a complimentary Orchid small bag which was really thoughtful and sweet of her to do so.๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ’•  The small bag is actually (amazingly) quite small compared to its siblings.  It's much smaller than my smallest JIB bag and is really suitable for something like a hat or sock project๐Ÿงฆ (you can literally only put in 1 skein of yarn or 2 50g skeins of yarn in there and nothing else may fit; even a large skein or cake may not fit in it (or it would fit but what you're knitting might not!)).

MAJOR PROs: What I've found most useful about the bags is that the snap they have on the outside is really dang handy! ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ’• I just unsnap the outside snap and simply strap it to my bag and voila! I now have a "strap" that makes it quick and easy grab and go allowing me to lug it around with me now! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฅณ๐Ÿ™Œ  The large bag is really, really large!๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿ˜  So large that you could put maybe 2 or 3 large sweater projects in there and store a couple of smaller projects in there too!๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜ I'm currently using it as a gigantic knitting bucket to store my 2 sweater projects and a mini project and I may convert it to my blanket bag project when I'm done with my "smaller" projects. ๐Ÿ˜‰

CONs (but Not Deal Breakers): I found that the bags do not cinch really tightly (due to the thickness of the fabric).  It leaves (what I think is) a large enough hole that I feel that if I have little things in the bag that's not in its own bag, it could accidently fall out if it was jostled or accidently flipped over.  On that note, the jewel-toned bags are thicker than the original coloured bags (they feel thinner and lighter) and some ways a tad heavier but, for the colours, I think it's totally worth it as it stands up very well when opened (and you don't even need to flip the opening over to have a firm "top".  Lastly, the paracord is sewn into the drawstring area (and understandably so as it prevents seeing/having any "knots" at the end or around the drawstring area as well as prevents the paracord from really shifting around); so, if you should ever need to replace it (or want to change it with some other colour), you will need to unpick seams and possibly resew some areas to do so.
  • I had also miraculously found someone on Etsy who would make my magical CoCoKnits blocking mat bag:

REVIEW: OMG๐Ÿ˜ฑ  I'm so glad that I preserved and found someone to make my dream knit blocker bag because it's P-E-R-F-E-C-T!!!๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ’–❤️❤️❤️❤️  It fits all my blocking mats pluses room for a few more (if I wanted a few more blocks) AND my Knitter's Pride blockers, pins and even my darning bag!  My blocking wires fit perfectly in the zipped!! pocket I asked for as well and if need be, I could put my spare T-pins in there as well.  And, to top it off, it fits perfectly in the space I had originally envisioned storing it and the grab handles makes it easy to pick up and put it away.  Plus, the sweater print is perfect for this bag! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ’–❤️๐Ÿ’–❤️

In April, I purchased:

  • The Dala Sweater pattern as it was on "sale" for Easter ๐Ÿฐ  I couldn't help myself: it was so cute and seeing how others had made their sweaters were really inspirational!๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ’–❤️
  • I also purchased a custom 3/4 sleeved shirt that said:
Isn't it so cute?!๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ˜ I have been looking for a holiday shirt and I finally got a year-round holiday shirt!๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŽ…❄️
Look at all  those cute clothing accessories that will help to stretch my skills! ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿคญ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿฅฐ  How was I supposed to resist? ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿคญ๐Ÿ˜

REVIEW: I love the pattern๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ’• It was easy to follow and quick to knit up.  What I loved even more than the stuffed animal pattern was the clothes and everyone else's inspiration on their take of the clothes! ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ’• I had so much fun making this and its corresponding wardrobe! ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ’•

In May, I managed to actually purchase .... nothing!!! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿฅณ

In June, I purchased:

  • Two (2) Yarn Holder & its accessory so that it can hold both a mini and full skein of yarn from Etsy:
Here's how it looks like in use
Here's what the "large" attachments look like
Here's what my custom one looks like
REVIEW: Because it's 3D printed, it can be a little flimsy when fully extended and the bars don't fully slide smoothly (I find that it sticks on one side but it could be due to the weather environment I live in (think hot and humid!)).  And, if you're winding yarn back onto it, you need to watch your tension because it can bow in if you start winding tighter than when you first start.  Neither of these "issues" are deal breakers for me because I understand the limits of what this particular 3D printed item has.  I am very glad that I sprang for the full extension set, including getting the larger "moons" as that's perfect for winding full skeins in yarn weights heavier than sock yarn! (I actually ripped out a sweater made with DK weight skeins for a full sweater on to it so I could wind it back into a cake.  It worked perfectly and kept my yarn untwisted and untangled - perfect to put back onto my (new) swift to wind back into a cake.๐Ÿ˜‰)
  • I also realized how much I love my envelop pouches that I had purchased from Crimson Rabbit; I love it so much that ll of my current pouches are in use! which means I needed more of them! ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿฅฐ So I picked up another "set" of custom pouches (and a wallet):

I find these pouches are the prefect little trays to hold my millions of little items from stitch markers to cable holders to my wool needles that I really do need one everywhere!๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ’•(plus, it really helps to contain everything so it's not all over my table!๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿคญ)
  • I also really wanted these yarn bobbins but found that they were discontinued by the original maker:
But ... I was able to find them here!  And ... since I needed to pay for shipping, I decided that I might as well "be economical" and picked up a "few" more things:

Cocoknits Makers Board
Cocoknits Leather Cord and Needle kit
Addi Edleweiss needle holders
Knit Picks Wool Needles

REVIEW:

I'm on the fence with my CocoKnits maker's board.  It's ... alright; it's not as sturdy as my bookholder but, when using one (1) printed page of instructions/chart, it does work better than my original whiteboard idea.  But, to double as a book holder and magnetic board, it's ... ok.  I feel that where it props up isn't supportive enough (or else I'm not using it properly) as eventually, it starts sliding back and falling over.๐Ÿ˜ณ  I had Hubs make me a cardboard triangle to support the inside of it and that seems to have worked for now.

As for the Cocoknits leather cord and needle kit, it's actually pretty ingenious!  I had read this review which convinced me that I had to try it; true to her review, she was right about everything about this kit: from how the cord "threads" on and really holds to how you can slip stitches on and off it it easily because of the needles, it was truly worth it.  While I also have my silicone ones, I find that those "drag" much more than the leather cord does.  I'm looking forward to finding 1.5mm (slippery) nylon cords to also try out as I can really see how handy this will be (from provisional cast-ons to holding stitches).๐Ÿฅฐ

The Addi Eddlewise stitch holders are very pretty but, my US 7 needles can't actually fit through them ... So, it's not as functional as the heart versions I have.๐Ÿ˜”๐Ÿคท

The Knit Picks wool needles are very similar to the Pony needles I have, just more colourful and have a sharper point.๐Ÿฅฐ

  • And to top it off, oddly, I was working on three (3!) large sweater projects and I actually ran out of 37" SWIVEL cables and cable connectors!๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿ˜ฑ  So, I went back to my favorite Chiaogoo distributor and picked up 2 more cables and 4 more connectors.๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ™Œ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿฅณ

In July, I managed to actually purchase .... nothing!!! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿฅณ

In August, I managed to actually purchase .... nothing!!! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿฅณ

In September, I broke down and purchased:

  • A custom printed yellow mushroom bag!  I had come across this Etsy seller when I found this bag and found that she had a mushroom print!  So, of course I had to ask if she'd make me a yellow version.๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿฅฐ
I know the bag was supposed to be 9”x6”x3” but it's been ages since I've purchased such a small bag that when it came in, I didn't realize how s-m-a-l-l it really was!๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿ˜”  But I very much love the mustard yellow and the print!  It is so amazing and cute! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ’•  The only thing that I don't love is that it's not zippered all the way (which is odd because the bag I requested the mushroom print to be on had the zipper end to end) and the zipper sticks (a lot) so it makes it hard to open and close (or won't zip all the way unless you kind of force it; plus I don't think she used a YKK zipper (again my fault for not asking)). I think a little bee's wax will help make the zipper easier to use.
  • I'm in the process of finding a new job and I promised myself that if I got an interview, I could treat myself to a new clothing item.  I've gone to a few interviews so, it was time to reward myself and my clothing item of choice was: a wool dress shirt from Wool&: arden twill shirtI'm hoping that this will be a comfortable and multi-use shirt for me (and maybe I can use it at my next job!). ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ€๐Ÿฐ
REVIEW: The shirt was a very nice eggplant colour (a good winter purple for me) and it's actually quite comfortable.  I wear it as shown in the picture but, if I wanted to have full long sleeves, it's a good length for me.  It's a heavier shirt so, one can also use it as a light jacket as well.  When I initially received it, there was a deep wrinkle on the pocket but I was able to get it out.  Then when I washed the shirt, it did come out wrinkled but, I think a good hot shower and some water spritzing will get the wrinkles out (without needing any serious ironing).  Overall, I'm very happy with this shirt and glad I purchased it. ๐Ÿฅฐ

In October, there was a sale on Etsy and it was Socktober and, I was actually feeling my creative juices to knit again so... I bought:

  • A "couple" of sets of stitch markers!  I couldn't help it ... I've been wanting these stars and hearts for a long while now and now they also came in glitter and what girl doesn't want & love something glittery? Plus, there was a really good sale and free shipping so, there was no other excuse left but to buy it! ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿฅฐ
A set of rainbow ๐ŸŒˆ
A set of Valentines hearts ๐Ÿ’•
Two (2) sets of glitery stars ⭐️
I couldn't resist buying them!๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜ It was simply too good a deal to pass up.๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿฅฐ
  • And, since I was finally getting excited about knitting, I also bought yarn to supplement my stash (I didn't have enough for the pattern I wanted to make).  Plus, Hubs said that he wanted me to make him a Gansey sweater (now that I have a Gansey Sweater book!๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜) so, how could I deny him a knitted sweater?๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜ So we also bought yarn specifically for this sweater project. ๐Ÿ˜

In November, I missed Socktober by 1 day so, I ended buying my sock yarn in this month ๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿคท

  • Simply Sock Yarns has a promotion that if you bought sock yarn during the last week of October, they'd throw in a free bag.  Thankfully for me, I needed more yarn for my Dala Sweater, yarn for Hubs Gansey sweater and I also wanted to try Malabrigo's Ultimate Sock yarn so here's what I bought and my "free" bag:
  • Then I realized that I didn't buy enough yarn needed for Hub's Gansey sweater pattern (that I also bought this month) and fortunately for me, LoveCrafts had a great sale on the same yarn so I bought 3 more skeins.
  • And while not knitting related, I also wanted to try some wool bras by Branwyn as I wanted to reduce my polyester footprint.  I ended up purchasing both the Essential Bralette and the Essential Busty Bra as I wanted to try both of them. While they're not a traditional bra (and it's really more like a bralette), I did find them quite comfortable and supportive (although it's not as good a my Ridge Merino Send-It Sports Bra because the Branwyn bras doesn't come with any slits to add in cups to reduce/prevent "highlights").  What I would rave about it is that it actually comes in "bra" colours so, you can't see it under your clothes and so forth.  Plus, while it doesn't have slits to add my own padding to reduce/prevent highlights, I found that it did keep me warm/cool enough and I didn't feel as sweaty in it like I do with my more traditional bras, particularly on hot humid days.

In December, I purchased ....

Plus, it helps that I have a pair of silk pajama pants (that I've loved for years) that has a pretty big hole now where I need to mend it so, this will come in handy to actually fix it.
  • In conjunction with my new loom, I had to buy some silk thread to actually mend that hole in my pajamas:
  • I saw these 2 patterns on Raverly and I just couldn't resist purchasing them: Autumn Alpine & Sipila.  They were so cute and inspiring!๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ’•
  • And while I actually purchased this last year, my EEW Cone Winder finally came in!
  • Lastly, while not knitting related, I decided that I wanted to finally give water colouring a try (insteading of waiting until I retired).  So I purchased these water colour brushes, paint and paper to get me started:
I've been finding it refreshing to learn something new and be a beginner with it (and also be ok that I may always be a beginner with this "craft" as I was never much of an illustrator).  While I haven't used my new water colour paper yet (I have some cheaper water colour paper we were using for cards that I've been using to test out my brushes and paints on), I look forward to seeing how my skills improve as I slowly advance on this new adventure. ๐Ÿ™‚

Year Four of the pandemic has nearly ended and it seems like the world has simply given up on the pandemic.  Where we live, testing and checking for COVID has simply stopped and most people have simply gone back to pre-pandemic times.  It's clear now that folks whom are immunocompromised are literally on their own.  For all the "talk" of taking care of one another, that has gone to hell in a handbasket as it seems that "going back to (one's old) life" is more important than being mindful of everyone's health as a whole.  Now, when people are "sick", it's unclear if they have allergies, a cold or they really have COVID.  Even the said sick person doesn't know (and sometimes doesn't care) if they have COVID or it's really a cold. ๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿ˜”๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿคท

Unlike last year, I haven't purchased as much as last year; nevertheless, it has been a stellar year in my knitting & accessory purchase buys; being at home has allowed me to search the web and find things I would not normally come across, much less allowed myself to indulged in. ๐Ÿ˜ฒ๐Ÿ˜๐ŸŽ‰ I have also thoroughly enjoyed all my purchases (both from prior years and my current purchases) and am quite grateful for some of the things I've purchased (they've come in so handy and have really made my life so much better!).  I wonder what next year will bring and what else I will be buying next year ... ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ™Œ ๐ŸŽ‰

Dala Sweater

I finally had some knitting mojo back and as a H-U-G-E goal for myself for the end of the year, I challenged myself to make/start three (3!) sweaters over my long 3-week vacation.  To start, I decided that I was going to finally make my Dala Sweater.  With my Chiaogoo Needles and beloved Malabrigo Sock Yarn, here's how my adventure went:

12/13/23 cast on, finished to row 11 of the neck line.

12/14/23 redid row 11 (wrong needle size!๐Ÿคฆ), finished to row 25, ready to start on the chart! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿฅณ

12/15/23 chart! row 26-33 (chart row 1-7)

12/16/23 chart! row 34-43 (chart row 8-17)

12/17/23 chart! row 44-51 (chart row 18-25)

12/18/23 chart! row 52-59 (chart row 26-33)

12/19/23 chart! row 60-65 (chart row 34-39)

12/20/23 chart! row 66-75 (chart row 40-49)  I couldn't believe how long it took me to just get through the chart portion ... I know I'm knitting with sock yarn and the chart was very straight forward but for some reason or another, it took me f-o-r-e-v-e-r to get through it.  Oddly, I could only do a couple of rows a day ... I was lucky if I could do ten (10) rows a day. ๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿ˜”  Now that I was finally done, it was time to split for the sleeves and the body!

12/21/23 row 76-95 (20 rows) k

12/22/23 row 96-125 (30 rows) k

12/23/23 row 126-145 (20 rows) k

12/24/23 row 146-168 (23 rows) k

12/25/23 row 169-175 (7 rows) k for a total of 100 rows for 28.5 cm in the body; 1 decrease row (row 176); & row 177-186 2x2 ribbing (10 rows)

12/26/23 row 187-196 2x2 ribbing (10 rows) for a total of 24rows for 6cm of 2x2 ribbing; & final k row (row 197) before binding off.  Now, it was time for the sleeves! Using my 3.5mm needles k rows 1-8 then decrease in the next two (2) rounds and continue decrease every 11th & 12th rounds thereafter six (6) more times where I finished up to the first of the repeats this day for sleeve 1 (through row 22).  While I normally would do both sleeves at the same time, the ball of yarn I was using had so much yarn barf (yes, I did such a poor job of winding it into a ball this time! ๐Ÿ˜”๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿคท), I felt that it wasn't worth the trouble of trying to do both sleeves at the same time this time around.

12/27/23 continued sleeves and decreases five (5) more times (row 23-82) for a total of 82 rows for 20.5 cm in the sleeves; then switching to my 3mm needles to start the 2x2 ribbing (row 83)

12/28/23 finish sleeve one for the remaining row 84-102 for a total of 20 rows for 5cm of 2x2 ribbing with a final k row (row 103) before binding off. Next up, sleeve two!๐Ÿฅณ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽŠ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿฅฐ where I did row 1-35 of the 2ne sleeve.

121/29/23 completed most of sleeve two! ๐Ÿฅณ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽŠ๐Ÿ™Œ  Just 11 rows and the bind off left!

12/30/23 finished sleeve two! ๐Ÿฅณ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽŠ Here's what my completed sweater looks like (unblocked):

As you can see, it took me nearly 2.5 weeks to finish this sweater so, my goal of finishing three (3) sweaters is not going to happen.  But, at lest I was able to finish 1 sweater (really a record for me to complete it in 2.5 weeks! ๐Ÿฅณ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽŠ๐Ÿ™Œ) and I'll be able to start on the next one shortly so, maybe I'll have 1.5 sweaters done by the new year ... ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿคž๐Ÿ€

UP-DATE: And, here's what my sweater looks like on me:

Custom Knit Phillips Dreamwear Headgear-Cover v7.0

My poor Hubs ... he's been having trouble with his headgear again.  So, he asked if I could make him something to cover where the headband connects to the tube headband.  So, with a little paper MacGyver-ing, he showed me what he wanted.  Then it was my job to turn his concept into a reality.  So, with my Chiaogoo 3.5mm (US 4) needles and my Berroco Silk yarn, I casted on 15 sts; did 30 rows of seed stitch; then bound off and seamed bits of the edges so that the headgear could go through it as well as the back headband.

Now, it's Hub's job to test it out to see if his concept and my knitting works for him (at least for now until it doesn't work again ๐Ÿ˜‹).๐Ÿคž

Friends of Winter (ๅ†ฌ ใฎ ๅ‹้”) & Hachimitsu (่œ‚่œœ) and Mochi (้ค…)

So ... I had run out of yarn for my Trรถjan Barbros stjรคrnor sweater and now had to patiently wait my yarn order to arrive in the mail to finish off my sleeves.  And, to top it off, my stranded sock project was still elusive to me. ๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿคฆ Thus, I needed another project to keep me busy in the meantime.  Since I've had several projects in my queue that I was thinking I would make next year for my niece, I figured now was a good time to start it.

First up is a snowperson like doll from Red Heart called Winter Friend.  With confusing help from my niece (& more directed help from my Mom), we picked out turquoise legs, a snow white body, a sparkly red hat and a pink scarf.  Using my Chiagoo 4.5mm needles, I casted on and here's how my adventure went:

  • It took me a total of 22 rows to complete the legs.
  • I followed most of the instructions for the body, except I did a M3B, instead of a M5B as I was using bulky weight yarn for the "buttons"; did 6 additional rows then shaped the shoulders.
  • For the head portion, I did not cast off from the shoulders; instead, I did 2 additional rows after the 9th round of the shoulders (@ 20 sts per row) then proceeded with the instructions for the head.  Then, I ran out if white yarn on the 11th row!๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿคฆ‍♀️๐Ÿคฆ‍♀️๐Ÿคฆ‍♀️
    • I called my mother back to debate about how to move forward and after some discussion, we decided that a pink body would "match" the legs and a snow white head.  So, I ripped out the what little of the head I was able to complete as well as the body to change the body colour and ensure I would have enough white yarn for the head.
    • Since I had to change the body colour, I decided that I would also modify where the buttons would go as I didn't like how the buttons originally looked: instead of the 1st button on R3, I changed it to R5 & the 2nd button to R13.  I completed the (new) body as described above.
  • As I started on the head again, I followed the initial instructions as noted above and finished it with an additional 5 rows before I started decreasing for the head then decreased until I had 5 sts left before binding off.
  • I stuffed and seamed it as well as sewn in the legs and arms.  Here's what it looks like:

Now that I finally made one, it seemed lonely and looked like it needed a friend so, I made another one. ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜☃️ Since I had some experience with the first one,  did the second one a tad differently where I made an extra 20 sts row after I connected the yarn for the head.  I also didn't knit any of the "buttons"; instead, I added real buttons for the body, nose and eyes.  Here's how it turned out:

Then, I wanted to make accessories for them as well.  But my inspiration for knitting simply dried up. ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿคท  After a very long knitting drought, I remembered I bought a pattern to make Good Bear (Hachimitsu (่œ‚่œœ)) and Good Bunny (่‰ฏใ„ใ†ใ•ใŽ) back in April and that pattern had accessories so, maybe if I made one of those animals, it'll inspire me to make the right accessories for these Winter Friends.

I made Hachimitsu (่œ‚่œœ) in the matter of 2 days and I loved it so much, I kinda didn't like my Winter Friends anymore. ๐Ÿ˜”๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿคท And with that, I decided to frog them to reuse the yarn for accessories and a Good Bunny.  In less than an hour, I frogged both softies and  got lucky: I lost only the black yarn that I had used to make the nose and create shaping for each "friend" and very little of the pale yellow and fairy tail colours.

Here's how Hachimitsu looks (in its full natural state):

With my reclaimed yarn, I was ready to start making accessories for Hachimitsu (่œ‚่œœ).  With the help from Hubs, he picked out a yellow hat, grey cargo pants, a blue vest and a sparkly red sweater.  In the span of six (6) hour Hallmark holiday movie binge, I finished everything except the vest:

I made no changes to the hat:
Then I tried it on Mochi and determined I needed ear holes.  So, I fixed the original hat I made (it would only fit on Hachimatsu because its ears kept it on): modified hat to include ear holes so that it could be used on both animals.  Fortunately for me, I didn't need any additional yarn for the modification. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿฅณ
For the pants, I added pockets by picking up 7 sts on eat side, then made 6 rows:
For the sweater, I used the instructions as a guideline and:

  • casted on 24 sts
  • 2 1x1 ribbing rows
  • 2 k rows
  • inc row (k3, m1)
  • 2 k rows
  • split for sleeves (8 sts)
  • 2 k rows
  • inc row (k4, m1)
  • 6 k rows
  • inc row (k4, m1)
  • 7 k rows
  • 3 1x1 ribbing rows
  • for the sleeves (16 sts total): k 17 rows, 2 1x1 rows

Here's how it came out:
The next day, I started the vest where I used the instructions for the jacket as a guide and

  • casted on 28 sts
  • k 8 rows
  • button hole row
  • k 1 row
  • inc row
  • k 1 row
  • split and bind off for armholes
  • k 2 rows
  • inc row (k4, m1)
  • button hole row
  • k 6 rows
  • inc row (k5, m1)
  • button hole row
  • k 8 rows
  • button hole row
  • k 5 rows & bind off
It took a bit of work to figure it out and I'm happy with the outcome:
Then, as I was scrolling through all the pictures of Good Bunnies and Bears on Raverly, I saw someone had made a pair of overalls!๐Ÿฅฐ  It was so cute that I wanted a pair for Hachimitsu (่œ‚่œœ) too.  I used the pants as a guide to make my bottom-up overalls:

  • cast on 16 sts for each leg
  • 2 rows of 1x1 ribbing
  • inc row (k2, m1)
  • k 9 rows
  • connect both legs
  • k 21 rows
  • bind off 24 sts
  • k2tog, k20, p2tog
  • p 1 row
  • k2tog, k18, p2tog
  • p2tog, k16, k2tog
  • k2tog, k14, p2tog
  • k16
  • k2tog, k12, p2tog
  • p4 (place sts on stitch holder as this is part of the straps)
  • bind off 6 sts
  • p4
  • k4/p4 for 27 rows for the straps & attach straps with a 3-needle bind off to the back part of the overalls
For make the front pockets (make 2):
  • cast on 6 sts
  • k 4 rows
  • k2tog, k4
  • p3
  • p2tog
  • bind off and use remaining yarn to sew the pockets on
For the back pockets (make 2):
  • cast in 6 sts
  • k 4 rows
  • k2tog, k2, k2tog
  • k2tog 2x
  • bind off and use remaining yarn to sew the pockets on.
For the chest pocket:
  • cast on 8 sts
  • k 6 rows
  • ssk, k 6, k2tog
  • p2tog, k4, p2tog
  • k2tog 2x
  • bind off and use the remaining yarn to sew on pocket.
Finally, for the hammer "pocket": cast on 2 sts; *p1, k1; k1, p1* 10x then attach to overalls:
Next up was a skirt.  I based it on the pant pattern:
  • cast on 30 sts
  • 2 rows 1x1 rib
  • inc row (2x for a total of 48 sts)
  • split sts for 16 sts ea in each colour using helical stitch
  • k 3 rows
  • inc row (k4, m1)
  • k 4 rows
  • inc rows (k5, m1)
  • k 4 rows
  • bind off
Here's how it came out:
Next up was a striped puff sleeved tee which I based it on the sweater pattern:
  • casted on 24 sts
  • 2 1x1 ribbing rows
  • 2 k rows
  • inc row (k3, m1)
  • 2 k rows
  • split for sleeves (8 sts)
  • 2 k rows
  • inc row (k4, m1)
  • 6 k rows
  • inc row (k4, m1)
  • 5 k rows
  • 3 1x1 ribbing rows
  • for the sleeves (16 sts total):
    • k6 sts
    • k2, m2, k2, m2, k2, m2, k4, m2, k2, m2, k2, m2, k2
    • k 2 rows
    • k, k2tog 6 times, k2, k2tog 6 times, k
    • k 1 row
    • purl bind off
Here's how it came out:
Now I wanted to make a dress!
๐Ÿฅฐ  So I used the puff sleeved tee & skirt patterns as a guide:
  • casted on 24 sts
  • 2 1x1 ribbing rows
  • 2 seed st rows
  • inc row (k3, m1) (32 total sts)
  • 2 seed st rows
  • split for sleeves (8 sts)
  • 2 seed st rows
  • inc row (k4, m1) (42 total sts)
  • 10 seed st rows
  • 6 k rows
  • 1x1 vertical k stripes for 4 rows
  • continue 1x1 vertical k stripes, inc 2 sts every 4 sts (60 total sts)
  • continue 1x1 vertical k stripes for 8 rows
  • continue 1x1 vertical k stripes, inc 2 sts every 6 sts (80 total sts)
  • continue 1x1 vertical sk tripes for 8 rows
  • continue 1x1 vertical stripe in seed sts for 2 rows
  • bind off
  • Then for the sleeves, pick up 8 sts (total 16 sts)
  • Continue seed st for 11 rows
  • Bind off
Here's how it turned out:
It was finally time to make Mochi (้ค…).  I decided that I would try my hand at intarsia and give the bunny patches.  Initially, I was going to make a rainbow Mochi but decided that I didn't have the energy or patience to make all those transitions to various colours.  So with my Chiagoo US 8 (3.5mm) needles, I used my Yuzawaya Cream yarn and casted on the feet and put two (2) small black patches on 1 leg and a larger light grey patch on the other leg.  Then I connected the legs and on the 3rd round (after the increase), I added a 5-st bobble tail on in a dark grey.  By the time I reached the 7th row of the body, I realized that I wasn't going to have enough Cream yarn to finish the bunny.  So, I regrouped, ripped everything out and started again with black yarn as the main colour of Mochi and used the Yuzawaya Cream, Knit Picks Dove Heather & Cobblestone Heather and the remnants of my Caron Grey Heather for various patches and bits and pieces of Mochi.  Overall, I think Mochi came out quite well:
The best part?  All the clothes I originally made for Hachimitsu fit perfectly on Mochi.  Now they can both share clothes!  I realized that I just needed to make another top so that they would have two (2) outfits each as well as modify the original hat I made along with a few accessories to round out their outfits. So, here's a few more additional items I made:

A bonnet: I virtually followed the pattern except I changed the ribbing part to another colour (to match the shawl and did a 3 st i-cord instead of a 2 st i-cord (due to the weight of the yarn I was using - it looked better a little "thicker").
A shawl: I also virtually followed the pattern as well except for the picot edging; instead of having the edging close together, I spread it a few stitches apart (because I was running out of yarn).  Fortunately for me, I was able to win at yarn chicken this round with 4.33 yds leftover! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿฅณ
A tanktop:  I used the sweater, striped top & dress top as a guide.  I initially thought I'd find a reverse stitch pattern but when I tried it, it looked like a muddled mess.๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿคฆ‍♀️  Then I tried a linen stitch and that was also a muddled mess too. ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿคฆ‍♀️๐Ÿ˜ญ  I finally ended up using a slip stitches create horizontal stripes.  Here's how it went:
  • casted on 24 sts in the blue color
  • 2 1x1 ribbing rows in the blue color
  • 2 k rows in the blue and yellow colors
  • inc row (k3, m1) (32 total sts) in the blue color
  • 2 k rows in the blue and yellow colors
  • bind off 8 sts and cast on 8 sts for "sleeve" in the blue and yellow colors
  • 2 k rows in the blue and yellow colors
  • inc row (k4, m1) (42 total sts) in the blue color
  • 4 k rows alternating in the blue and yellow colors
  • inc row (k5, m1) (42 total sts) in the blue color
  • 22 k rows alternating in the blue and yellow colors, ending on a yellow row
  • 2 row 1x1 ribbing in the blue colors
  • bind off
And, here's what the outfits all look like on either Hachimitsu and Mochi:
I think my most favorite articles of clothing is the overalls and the tank top.  I realized while making all the clothes for them, that little girl in me who used to love to play with paperdolls where I could dress them up was still there. ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ’• Both Hatchimitsu and Mochi are so cute and adorable! ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ’•  And, I had so much fun making them and their clothing!  Now, I almost don't want to give them to my niece! ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿคญ๐Ÿ˜Š  They may just need to live with me for a while longer and who knows how much more clothes I'll dream up for them!๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿคญ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ’•
