Custom Knit Phillips Dreamwear Headgear v5.0

My poor Hubby ... while the headgear that I've been making for him works, it's just (still) not ... perfect.😳😒  The headgear (v4.0) was just too big and floppy; so it was just a little too loose where it felt like it would slip off.  And, now that I looked back at what I did, I can see why: I had casted on 140 sts when it should have been for a 120 sts instead!🤦😭

In the meantime, he's (still) been using his Jacques Cousteau hat and he really wanted a better fitting (aka shorter) version of it.  So, it was an opportunity for me to pick up more Malabrigo Rios yarn, colourway: Idiecita and with my Chiaogoo Twist 4.0mm (US7) needles & a 40" cable, here's Hubby's (new) version of the Jacques Cousteau:

  1. Cast on 120 sts.
  2. K3, P2 for 25 rows (for about 8 cm (3.25 in))
  3. *Work 26 sts in the rib pattern, then K2tog (27th & 28th sts => 27 st), place marker, P2*, repeat * 3 more times.
  4. *Work to 2 sts of marker, K2tog, P2*, repeat * Continue to decrease in this fashion until 12 sts remain (that's 24 rows).
  5. Break yarn and thread it through the remaining sts, pull tight and weave in ends.
Ta-da!  Here's how it looks:
I even figured out how to unpick headgear v4.0 and redid it!  This time, I casted on only 100 sts, instead of 120 sts as it seemed like it was still too loose at 120 sts.  With that, I still knitted the K3, P2 portion for 30 rows before starting the decrease at 21 sts for 23 rows until there was a total 8 sts left before binding off.

Here's the finished hat:
It's still a tad loose but is MUCH better than it was before.  I suspect that it's simply the nature of the silk yarn and the fact that this hat pattern wasn't made to be this short that causes the looseness.
